Joe and John Doherty
Originally established in 1892 by Joseph Doherty, with his brothers, John and A.J., who later settled in Clare, the (Coleman) Hardware Co., Sadderly and Undertaking was located between the railroad and Railway Street, facing Fourth Street.  John was joined by his wife, the former Helen Sullivan in 1894.  Their two children, Lear and Georgia, continued family ownership of the Doherty Funeral Home.

In 1946 the home of Harry & Edna Bowland, located at 215 W. Adams St., was purchased as a new and current location for the funeral home.  The house was built in 1891, by Charles Niggeman, one of the founding fathers of the City of Coleman.

Ray and Helen O'Laughlin
  1946 also marked the arrival of Raymond O'Laughlin, his wife, the former Helen Sullivan, and their two children, Marie and Patrick. Raymond and Helen purchased the funeral home from their cousins, Lear and Georgia Doherty, and began ownership of the O'Laughlin Funeral Home in 1948.  Ray and Helen were both licensed undertakers and embalmers at their funeral home in Andover, New York, before moving to Coleman.  In 1960, Raymond and Helen sold the business to their son Patrick, and moved to Florida for their retirement.  Leaving the funeral home available for Patrick and his family, consisting of his wife Christine (Porter), children, Mary, Raymond and Paul, to make their home.  A few years later, a son Michael joined them residence at 215 W. Adams St.  Michael continued the family vocation, serving his apprenticeship with his Father, Patrick, and then graduating from Wayne State University Department of Mortuary Science in 1984.  Michael  worked for the Ross B. Northrop & Son Funeral Home in Detroit and Northville.  Returning back to Midland County, Mike was employed by the Miner Bradley Funeral Home in Midland, Sisson Mathews Funeral Home, Gladwin and the O'Laughlin Funeral Home, Coleman.  In 1993, Michael purchased the funeral home from his Father Patrick, and incorporated it into the O'Laughlin Funeral Home, Inc.
